Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Cushion Pine at Aoyama

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji of Hokusai Katsushita.

Today - I'd like to introduce;
青山円座松

Cushion Pine at Aoyama Aoyama enza-no-matsu
Edo period (1615–1868) ca. 1830–32
9 5/8 x 14 3/4 in. (24.4 x 37.5 cm)
Polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper.

Pine trees in the garden of Ryugenji Temple, Buddhist temple in Shibuya, Tokyo, which was well-known sightseeing spot in Edo period, were depicted.

Ryugenji Temple (龍厳寺)belongs to Rinzai Sect and its garden was famous for Old Pine tree of  histrical interest. History says the tree had long branches of 13m long (to the direction of East and West) and 14m long (to the direction of North and South.) , and its center was swelled.
Personally, I can't imagine such a big tree.

People could enjoy beautiful shape of Mt. Fuji too at that time.
As, city development has not been made, Hokusai featured Edo with Mr. Fuji in his paintings.

 We can see people were enjoying drinking sake. Hokusai depicted not only scenery, but also everyday life of commoners.

Ryugenji Temple was Famous Edo Sightseeing Sport

Today we can't enjoy same scenery, however, there is monument of Matsuo Basho (Haiku Poet of Edo Period 1644–1694 ) and rare Serpent benten statue, whose head is human and tail is serpent, Stone on which Hachiman Taro Yoshiie (1039-1106) Minamoto clan samurai of the late Heian Period, ancestor of Minamoto Yoritomo, Founder of Kamakura Feudal Government, also, first son of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi ) sat .
