Furoshiki is scarf-like square cloth used for wrapping and carrying things. It can be folded up and easily carried when not in use. Material is mainly silk. The history of Furoshiki (風呂=Bath敷=spread) goes back to 8th century, Nara Period.

At the time Furoshiki was already used for wrapping treasure in shosoin(正倉院) and was called "Tsutsumi"(包)(To wrap) and used to wrap precious things. In Heihan Period (794 to 1185), people used it mainly to wrap garments. From Nanboku cho period (1336 to 1392) , people started to use Furoshiki to go to public bath and use it so that they recognized their clothes without mistake after enjoying bath. This is why Furoshiki is named so.
